As long as you are reasonably competent at DIY, fitting a lock to your internal door should not be too difficult.

So first things first, here are the tool you are going to need.

Lock
Drill
Chisel
A Square
Tape
Tape Measure
Door Jamb
Hammer
16mm Augur Bit

Nothing that a decent tool box shouldn’t have.

The first thing we need to do is to make sure that the lock we have will fit the door. The best way to do this is to take the old lock with you when buying your new lock and compare the two, to make sure the new lock is no deeper than the old one. The other way, if the door doesn’t already have a lock fitted is the measure the side rail of the door, that the distance from the edge of the door to where either the door panels start or the door glass is, and then to make sure the new lock isn’t longer.

Now that you have your lock, we need to fit it. It this is a new door then the lock should be between 900mm to 1m from the floor. If the door frame has had a lock already fitted, the best way to determine the positioning of the door lock is to position the lock to match up with the strike plate on the door frame and them mark the position of the latch on the doors frame. Now close the door and mark on the door where the marks on the frame comes in contact with the door.

Using the latch marks as a guide [lace the lock on the door edge and mark the top and bottom of the lock, allow and extra 5mm top and bottom. Using the square mark in a center line, this will help when drilling out the lock.

Before drill out the lock from your internal door use the door jamb to stop the door moving while drilling. Now use some tape to mark the length you want to drill into the door on the drill bit, again add about 5mm leeway. Then using the center line you have drawn on the door edge make a series of drill whole to cut out the lock space. We then use the chisel the smooth out the drilled whole. Once the lock while is nice and smooth place the lock into the whole.

With the lock in place mark the edge of the lock plate, we now need to chisel out a recess so that the lock will sit flush with the door. Once the recess is cut out hold the lock against the side of the door and mark where the center point of the handle spindle is and the key whole is. Now repeat this on the other side of the door. Now drill out these two wholes,by drilling in half way from one side and then drill out the second half from the other side, this will help stop the door splitting.

Now insert the door lock and tap into place and use the screw provide to secure the lock to the door frame. Now attach the handle and cover plate to the sides of the door.

If this is a new frame you will need to chisel pout the strike plate on the frame for the door lock, once this has been completed and screw in you have finished. Well done!

Having some music on is a great way to make DIY more enjoyable. This still allows you to concentrate on whatever you’re doing but the work becomes a lot less dry and boring as you are able to sing along and lose yourself in the music.

Watch TV

If you are building a flat pack desk or something similar then there’s nothing to stop you from doing this in front of the TV while you watch your favourite program or a film. In fact this is a great way to save yourself time and get more done – rather than thinking to put on the TV while you’re working, wait until you would be watching TV anyway and then plan to do your DIY then so that you can kill two birds with one stone and get more done that day.

Chat

This is a great opportunity to catch up with your correspondence. Just put a friend or relative on hands-free and this way you can chat to them while you’re working and make sure that you don’t go too long owing anyone a phone call (which can get embarrassing…).

Another way to do this is just to invite someone over to help you or to hang out while you do the DIY, this way it can become a great social activity and you can have a good catchup as though you weren’t doing the work at all.

Read

It’s now possible to read while you work thanks to the brilliance of the Kindle. All you need to do is to lay it on the ground or a surface next to you, and that way you can read while flicking the pages by just clicking the buttons. With a regular book this isn’t possible because you have to hold it open, but this way it will stay on the page you want it.

Failing this you can also use an audio tape to accomplish pretty much the same thing or listen to a podcast. Stick your MP3 player or phone in your pocket with the headphones in and enjoy having a story read to you while you work, or even learning Spanish or whatever works for you.

While staining your doors can really enhance the natural beauty of the wood it is a little harder to produce a uniform and professional look than painting them. Its also important to point out at this point that there are several different types of wood stain for doors. A wood stain either enhance, bring out the wood grain or it can in fact obscure the grain. Another factor to consider is whether you are staining an internal door or an external door. Here we will be describing staining an internal door, the main difference would be the protection level of the stain plus you would want an oil based stain, for internal doors an oil or water based stain will be fine.

So now we’ve covered the different types of stain we can now move on to preparation. Preparation is very important before applying your stain, as any sanding after the stain has been applied will in fact remove the stain, as stain does not penetrate as deeply as paint does. So a good sanding down is needed to remove all surface marks. This would include removing any previous staining, varnish or paint, the use a 20-50 grain sanding paper is ideal. Once sanded al the sand dust should be completely removed. If you have just bought some new internal doors from us this should not be necessary, but the older your internal doors the more care should be placed in removing all marks and blemishes.

Next we can move onto the stain process itself. With soft wood such as pine or fern etc. a stain conditioner is recommended, this is to help you get an even stain over the whole wooden surface. Again like the stain itself stain conditioner can come in several variations, such as water or oil based, don’t forget to allow the conditioner to dry completely as per the instructions.

With the wood surface now dry its time to add the stain. Use the same type of stain as you did with the conditioner, in other words if you used an oil based conditioner then use an oil based stain and visa versa. To apply the stain use a paint brush or a cloth apply a think coat of stain, slowly in the direction of the grain, using smooth strokes. Allow this first coat of stain to semi-dry, typically 3-10 mins depending on whether the stain is water or oil based, be sure to check the instruction on the tin. Once this time is up you can remove any excess stain with a clean cloth and allow the wood to completely dry. If you require a deeper stain first make sure the internal door or whatever you are staining is totally dry then give the door a light sanding just to slightly rough up the surface making sure not to remove the stain you have just applied and then just repeat the process again.
