DIY is a fantastic hobby thatâs incredibly enjoyable whilst also offering heaps of rewards. However, even the most experienced of DIYerâs can sometimes make mistakes, which can often lead to problems which are out of their hands.
A fear of mistakes is one of the reasons many people refrain from embarking on a DIY project. Not only do they worry they will be mocked or laughed at should they make a noticeable mistake, but they also worry that the incurred damage will be irreparable.
However in most cases this is far from the truth. Companies who specialise in the repairs profession are used to dealing with mistakes made during a DIY venture, and as has been mentioned; such mistakes are not always made at the hands of newbies. In fact, mistakes are more commonly made by those who have become so confident in their abilities that they drop the level of care and attention that they place in their DIY, thereby making them more susceptible to errors.
While one solution to DIY blunders is to attempt to fix the problem using DIY, this isnât always the best option, particularly if invisible results are desired.
For example, the kitchen worktop often stands as an unfortunate victim of DIY â many inexperienced DIYerâs who lack the proper equipment choose to employ their kitchen surfaces for the job of chopping or sawing objects. The problem is that while the surface may be resistant to heat and kitchen knives, it is not built to withstand heavy duty DIY tools. This means the worktop is often left scratched or chipped.
DIY kitchen worktop repair kits are available. However, achieving results that will look âas good as newâ is the tricky part, and is not always attainable by those whose DIY skills lie in other areas.
The easiest solution is to employ a professional kitchen worktop repair service. Their experience and expertise combined should ensure that the work surface is reformed to its original glory and that the damage is near, if not totally, invisible.
Similar logic applies to repairs such as bathroom repairs. Many DIY projects are carried out in the bathroom, usually to avoid the expenses associated with bringing in a plumber. However, even if the plumbing project is a success, damage can often occur to the bathroom suite such as scratches, chips or stains. As with kitchen worktop repair, it is feasible to repair the damage in-house. However, in order to achieve the best results possible it is often worth hiring the services of a professional. Professional bath repairs specialists should be able to complete the work quickly, and to a standard that appears invisible to those who are not looking for signs of damage.
With this in mind, it should be noted to anyone considering a venture into DIY that they should simply go for it. Very few mistakes will be irreparable, and most can be repaired through another DIY project. However, there is always the option to employ a specialist, who will repair the damage to a very high standard, therefore enabling the DIY mishap to become a forgotten event of the past!

Making the decision to purchase an air purifier is one most people know they should make, but many times neglect doing it until the onset of an illness or allergy season has taken its toll. Purchasing a purifier, or an air cleaner, as it is sometimes referred to, is the right step in ensuring clean, fresh air in your home for you and your family to breath. Of course, you want to choose one that is also energy efficient to cut down on cost and to conserve resources. Unfortunately, one reason that people are bothered by the air they breathe is because it has become so contaminated by pollutants. You may think that once you enter your home these pollutants lessen, but research shows that indoor pollutants are 2 to 5 times higher indoors than they are outside.
There are many reasons in addition to these for purchasing an air purifier including, helping to eliminate bacteria, mold spores, allergens and dust. Purifiers also help eliminate cigarette smoke, pet and cooking odors.
In order to find the most environmentally friendly or âgreenâ air purifier, you will need to do some research. Many companies now offer units with recycled elements and even biodegradable parts. Fortunately, Energy Star makes it easier to find household appliances that are the better option for the environment. This government run organization marks the products which conserve the most energy and makes it easier for the consumer to support the âgoing greenâ cause.
Knowing the difference in air purifiers is the next step to choosing what works best in your home.
There are two basic kinds, individual room models are generally the most popular and can be moved from room to room. Whole-house purifiers are built into your home’s ductwork and work through your heating or cooling system. This type of system is normally planned for in the construction of a new home, or when adding a new heating or cooling system to your current home.
An individual room purifier is the only option if your home does not have a furnace or a central air or heating unit. Room air purifiers cost much less than whole-house models and weigh 10 to 20 pounds. Many models have handles and stand on the floor or a table and can be moved from room to room. Most individual air purifiers, or room-to-room models, contain a HEPA filter that can be removed and dusted or washed.
A whole-house air purifying system is a great choice when you remodel or upgrade your present system. The down-side is they can be expensive and must be installed professionally. They will also need to be wired into your home’s electrical system. Whole-house air filters are inexpensive and replace the existing filter in your system. These types of filters will need to be replaced every month or two to keep the purifier working properly.
The features the built-in purifiers offer include a range of standard filter sizes that will adapt to the return air opening of most standard heat and air units. Individual room air cleaners usually use a fan to pull air into the unit for filtration, but features are limited on portable models. Also, if you have pets or a family member who smokes, be sure that the air purifier is equipped with a carbon filter to remove all odors.
There are several good brands to choose from once you decide which kind of air purifier is right for your home and also for the environment â if you find the right one, itâs a win-win situation!

Why Am I Doing This?
There are a number of reasons why people choose to make over their kitchen but it usually comes down to two main factors: either theyâre doing it for themselves, or theyâre doing it because they are planning to sell.
The reason you want to make over your kitchen should affect exactly what you do and how much you want to spend. If youâre only making over your kitchen to sell your home, thereâs no point splashing the cash on the flashiest kitchen around. However, you do want the kitchen to look good and be of a decent quality â a kitchen completed on the cheap could be spotted quite easily by the savviest house buyers, and you donât want to start a trail of thought that leads them to believe everything in the home has been done on a budget.
However if the kitchen is entirely for your own use, then you should spend whatever you feel is appropriate in order to achieve a kitchen that meets your needs and fulfils your desires. Remember that a high quality kitchen will last the test of time better than something done on the cheap â meaning that should the time ever come to sell, there shouldnât be any need for a further remodel.
What Do I Need From My Kitchen?
Despite what many may believe, a kitchen is not just a kitchen. Some people cook with the flair of a Michelin chef, whilst some burn toast and rely on the microwave for the main meal of the day. If you never use the oven, there is no point forking out for a top of the range piece of equipment.
However there are some things that everyone needs. For example, unless you use paper plates and plastic forks youâre going to need a sink and tap. Due to this itâs worth investing in high quality fittings. Franke sinks are a great example of a quality, modern manufacturer of sinks and taps- however there are other brands of a similar nature so if Franke sinks donât stock anything that meets your needs, simply have a browse of the Internet to see what else is around.
Itâs also worth separating what you need from what you want. For instance, a fridge that looks a bit dated but works fine is a want â no matter how appealing that shiny American style fridge freezer might be. On the other hand, an oven that isnât heating up properly, or cupboard doors that are falling off their hinges are needs, and should certainly take precedence over the wants.
Do I Need A Complete Renovation or Will A Few Small Changes Do?
In many cases, there is no need to gut the kitchen and start from scratch in order to achieve the desired results. Cupboards that look tired or dated can be given a complete new lease of life simply by replacing the fronts. If your taps are of the one hot, one cold variety, there is no need to replace the sink in order to achieve a modern and functional sink area. Franke sinks and other similar brands manufacture stylish mixer taps that can be easily incorporated into a classic style sink.
Even a lick of paint can make a huge difference. Kitchen walls attract dirt very quickly, thereby making the kitchen appear tired and dirty when all it actually needs is a good clean and a new coat of paint.
Therefore if youâre on a budget, think logically about what changes are needed rather than spending money you donât have and which in the scheme of things, arenât really necessary.

DIY is a fantastic pursuit to get involved in. Not only is it very rewarding, you will gain a wealth of new knowledge and you (should) save a lot of money.
While many common DIY pursuits involve the completion of small home repairs, DIY doesnât just refer to fixing things; it also entails the at-home construction of goods such as furniture and even childrenâs toys. More commonly known as DIY woodwork, the hobby can allow a homeowner to enjoy furnishings that are completely unique, while also offering the potential to own higher quality products than are available in most shops. Itâs also considerably cheaper for homeowners to craft their own furniture than to pay the incredibly inflated prices that are so commonplace in high street stores.
Yet whether in regards to DIY woodwork or simple home repairs, ensuring you purchase high quality tools is integral. Many people make the mistake of purchasing cheap tools for DIY projects, citing the reason that they will only be used occasionally, or that the expense of quality tools is only worth it for commercial reasons. In regards to DIY woodwork, the tools will be subject to quite heavy use, and cheap models will simply not suffice.
To put it bluntly, cheap tools will not last â even if they are only utilised occasionally. They are also unlikely to achieve the same level and quality of results that is attainable through the use of high quality alternatives. Examples of brands that are worth investing in include Teng Tools, Snap-On and Drapper. As evidence of why purchasing such tools is an investment as much as it is a necessity for the purpose at hand, Teng Tools offer a lifetime guarantee with every one of their products. This means that years down the line the tools may be passed on or resold since they should be showing little, if any signs of deterioration.
In addition, considering that around 200,000 people are injured each year (in the UK) as a result of a DIY project, safety is a paramount concern. While all tools sold will be subject to testing and must meet rigorous safety standards, cheap tools will decline in quality over time, meaning that there is potential for them to become unsafe.
High quality tools however will retain their condition, even if they are used on a regular basis. In regards to brands such as Teng Tools, which offer a lifetime guarantee, any problems will be fixed without question â thereby guaranteeing that the tools will retain their safety. Cheap tools on the other hand, will need to be replaced once they start to show signs of wear and tear. The cost of replacing them will then offset any savings that were made through choosing to purchase a cheap set of tools.
One factor that leads many people to choose to purchase a cheap set of tools is the belief that a vast selection of tools is needed in order to get involved in DIY. However, there is no need to purchase all available tools at the outset.
A basic tool set can consist of a set of screwdrivers in addition to a claw hammer, Stanley knife, chisel, hack saw, spanner and pliers. Any additional tools can be purchased as and when they are needed, so that no resources get wasted through the purchase of expensive tools that will never see the light of day.
Whether you are electing to carry out the occasional DIY repair, or are embarking on a full time woodworking DIY hobby, it is worth choosing to invest in high quality tools. Even for those who occasionally dip in and out of DIY, quality tools can be resold (should the need arise) with little of their original value lost. This is in contrast to most cheap brands of tools, which will have near to no resale value once they have been used even a small number of times.

When the warmer months arrive, the garden becomes a vital part of the home. Whether itâs relaxing in the sun with a fascinating novel, alfresco dining or entertaining friends with a Sunday barbeque, an outdoor environment which is pleasant to reside in is vital.
Make The Most Of The Space
Many people dislike the idea of a small garden, yet even a limited amount of outdoor space is better than none. So long as the space is utilised properly the garden can offer as much in terms of enjoyment as one that is many times its size.
If your garden is on the small size you should consider whether grass or paving is more important to you. If youâre a dog owner, grass should definitely take precedence, yet if youâre not, paving is easier to manage (grass grows very fast when the sun is shining) and may stand as the better option.
You should also ensure to keep your garden clean and tidy, and ideally, incorporate at least some plants and flowers. A messy garden will look unattractive regardless of its size, yet a garden which is small but neat will not so much be judged by its size, but rather its looks, practicality and appearance.
Dedicate Some Time To Gardening
Many people fail to look after their garden due to a belief that it is incredibly tiring and time-consuming; yet it doesnât have to be. A garden that is weeded regularly is much less effort than one which is left to prosper. Whatâs more, the planting of flowers and other shrubbery may take up a very limited amount of time if needed. While a once yearly job of clearing the topsoil of dead plants and weeds is required, once this has been completed little work will be necessary until the following year.
Topsoil is simply the top layer of soil that lies on the earth. Topsoil is the most nutrient-rich portion of the soil and it is vital that this has been cared for properly in order for plants to flourish. Itâs often worth seeking a bag or two of organic topsoil, simply to ensure that your plants have access to some highly nutritious soil.
Once the shrubbery has been planted, the main portion of upkeep is watering. This is a very quick process that can also be quite enjoyable and is definitely worth the results.
Equip Your Garden With The Right Furniture and Appliances
If you really want to enjoy your garden when the sun shines, equipping it with proper furniture is vital. If youâre planning on enjoying some regular alfresco dining, or inviting friends round for barbeques, then it is advisable to invest in a table and a set of chairs (obviously ones that are built for the outdoors!).
Sun loungers are also an asset to any garden, and can make the difference between a garden which is uncomfortable to spend long periods of time in, and one that is akin to lying on a beach abroad.
Itâs also worth considering building a proper barbeque. Many ready built barbeques are cheap, insufficient in size and unable to last the test of time (or even a single summer). However, only basic brick laying skills are required in order to build an attractive, practical and permanent barbeque that all your visitors will admire.

Get Painting
While the belief that wallpaper is the only way to adorn walls with bright pictures and colourful patterns leads many people to shun the paint and pay over the odds for paper, choose to think outside the box and similar, if not superior results, can be achieved through the use of paint.
Invest in a few different colours of paint and some stencils. You can choose to have the entire room painted in one base colour, or paint different walls, or sections of walls in various colours. Then once the paint has dried, the stencils can be used to paint colourful images and really brighten the walls.
An added bonus of this is that the results will be completely original. Choosing wallpaper could mean that numerous other homes have walls adorned with the same images, yet by selecting your own colours, and using a variety of stencils, your childâs room is one that will look like no other.
Make Over The Windows
While fancy curtains can be on the pricey side, there are other ways to brighten a room and its windows without it costing the earth. Roller blinds for instance, are very cost-effective, and in many instances, completely versatile. For example, the simple nature of roller blinds makes it very easy for them to be adorned with images of various kinds. While some manufacturers of roller blinds will offer a vast plethora of photos and illustrations to choose from, some will go a step further and offer the chance for homeowners to send the manufacturers an image of their choice, which will then be printed onto the roller blinds. This is again a method of not only brightening a childâs room, but personalising it at the same time.
Great suggestions for images to place on roller blinds are pictures or paintings that your child has created, or photographs of happy family memories, such as a photo from a holiday or Christmas.
In fact, roller blinds are not just for childrenâs rooms. When used correctly, they can be the perfect addition to a home, and are particularly effective in bathrooms and kitchens.
Invest In Some Rugs
Although some rugs can be very expensive, many can be found for sale at around the £20 mark. As well as instantly brightening a room (assuming brightly coloured or patterned rugs are chosen), rugs will increase the comfort of the room, giving it a more homely feel. And perhaps most importantly, they will protect the carpet â a huge asset considering how messy children tend to be!
Scour Charity Shops
Charity shops are the perfect place to find toys and accessories for your childâs room, at a very small cost. You can easily pay a tenth or less of the price of buying the same items brand new. Toys, games and decorative items such as colourful clocks and cushions should be available in abundance in most charity shops meaning that for those who are really trying to budget, there should be no need to visit any overpriced high street stores. Whatâs more, some of the larger charity shops may even stock furniture, so keep an eye out for colourful cupboards and novelty pieces.

Designing your own home can be a highly rewarding process. If done correctly â you will end up living in your dream house, designed to fit your desires exactly. If you go about it the wrong way, however, you could end up spending lots of money on a house that you may not even like.
Building a house in Southern California is not cheap, so you should make sure that everything goes smoothly, or you may easily find yourself having spent past your budget before the house is even completed. The following tips should help ensure that you get exactly what you want when you commission your custom San Diego home design
TAKE LOTS OF NOTES
Unless you plan on serving as the architect and sole construction labor, you will have to communicate all your desired features to other people. If they do not have a clear idea of what you want, you probably wonât get it.
·     If you have seen a specific structure that you would like it to resemble, take pictures to show to the architect and workers. In fact, you should be taking pictures of anything you see that you would like to incorporate into the design. If you want your windows to look like the ones on a specific house that you often drive past, take pictures of those windows.
·     Look through magazines for ideas. There are plenty of home design and interior decoration magazines available to help you get ideas on how the final product should look.
·     Plan out the smaller details, not just the major design aspects. Figure out what colours you want, what materials you want your counter tops to be made of, where you want fixtures and appliances, and so on and so forth.
·     Review your budget every step of the way. If you want to add in more design features than you can afford, you will have to make some cuts. You can only build what you can pay for, so you may not be able to include everything you want. If you have been making lots of notes, as previously suggested, it should be fairly easy to figure out which items you can afford and which ones you cannot.
HIRE A DESIGN-BUILD COMPAN
If you want to design your own custom home, it would be wise to work with a design-build company. San Diego design services like these work with you on each step of the design process, so that you are never left out.  Further, they perform all necessary aspects of the job. A design-build company will feature a general contractor, architect, laborers, etc., so you will not have to hire any middlemen. The design-build company handles all aspects of the project itself.
