The Art of Broken Plan Living

Open plan living has long been a favoured look for the home but another trend has been becoming even more popular amongst the design conscious and that’s Broken Plan Living.

If you’re not familiar with the term, you may to an extent be already doing it – broken plan living is about having open spaces throughout the home but creating indivdual ‘zones’ by using different floor finishes, shelving or partitions to divide the spaces. In your kitchen for example, you may have a distinct area for cooking, with laminate floor, and and a carpeted area for relaxing or watching TV.
Many people are taking the trend one step further and creating unique areas using internal bifold or sliding doors and partitions – this enables you to have the best of both worlds – open the space when you need to and close it when you want to feel a bit more snug or need some peace and quiet to work.

If this trend appeals to you and you want to embrace broken plan living in your home, here are some useful tips to follow:
  1. Try and make sure natural light reaches each of your ‘zones’ – also consider adding additional soft lighting to illuminate a snug corner or work space.
  2. Think carefully about how you plan to use each ‘zone’ in your broken plan. Keep the dining area close to the kitchen and introduce a media area behind sliding doors so noise can be kept to a minimum.
  3. Consider including a mezzanine floor into your scheme – this can really transform a space into something special.
  4. Don’t forget to include plenty of storage in your design - a plan like this doesn’t lend itself to clutter!
